Jed Club

Jed Child Trust Foundation works toward every African child having access to good quality education, irrespective of their gender, background, and financial situation. The organization empowers children with an education so they grow up to be pioneers of African development. There are many deterrents to access to education and hence, Jed Child Trust Foundation not just empowers young children by giving them access to education but also protects them against abuse, slavery, labor, and other obstacles these youths face.

The Why:

Through the work that the organization has been doing, it has been observed that mental health issues are quite common in youths, owing to the circumstances these youths live in.

The What:

To provide psychological safety to these children, Jed Child Trust Foundation has established an initiative called Jed Club. This is an association initiated by university students to campaign for mental health awareness and help other university students manage stress better. The Jed club will operate through rallies and campaigns against suicide and will help students find emotional and mental healing.

Activities:

  • Members hold rallies 1-2 times every month, campaigning for good mental health for all young people.
  • Members attend the annual Students4Jed convention held in any of the universities in Africa that has Jed club.
  • Members attend mental health workshops, John Maxwell Leadership mentorship, Model United Nations, and other conventions in Universities in Africa held by Jed Child Trust Foundation.
  • Members organize campaigns among students to coach them on how to manage stress.
  • Once every 6 months, the members of Jed clubs will receive a professional psychologist and counselor who will provide a free counseling session to all members of the club.
  • Members also organize outreaches to rural areas.

Frequency of Jed Club:

Once established, Jed Club will operate once every two weeks, providing spaces and forums for members to engage in activities and dialogue around Mental Health.

Requirements:

Following are the ways to obtain membership to Jed Club:

  • Applicants should be students of a university in Africa in undergraduate programs/post graduate programs.
  • If there is Jed Club already established in the university, the application needs to be emailed to Jed Child Trust and the applicants will be put in contact with the Club President at the University.
  • If Jed Club hasn’t been established in their university, the applicant can choose to initiate it. The organization will provide the applicants with all the help and even extra credit for being pioneer members of the Club in their university.

Membership in Jed Club involves a thorough screening, which is carried out by members of the governing board.

Measuring progress and impact:

  • Number of Jed Clubs and members established across schools.
  • Tracking the number of rallies every month along with the effectiveness of these rallies.
  • Annual Students4jed convention held in one university will see a participation of x students.
  • Significant increase in awareness of mental health in all the participants.
  • Participants who attend the rallies actively engage in mental health advocacy.
  • Number of students accessing mental health services and number of students satisfied with the provided health services.
  • The effectiveness of Mental Health Workshops will be measured based on the number of participants and the participant satisfaction survey.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of Jed Club are to:

  • Foster mental health management among students.
  • Organize campaigns among students to coach them on how to manage stress.
  • Provide mental health medical counseling.

The hope is that through these objectives, Jed Child Trust Foundation will empower students to achieve their educational dreams.

The club's purpose is to help students find emotional and mental healing, through rallies and campaigns against suicide, stress management and health counseling, giving students the opportunity to achieve their educational dreams.
